Beverly Hills – With the calendar reading 90210 on Thursday, Beverly Hills took advantage of the once in a century coinciding of the date and the city’s famed ZIP code by starting a four-day series of dining and drinking events.

The kickoff event, “9.02.10 Day,” was hosted by CNN talk show host Larry King, a Beverly Hills resident, and included unlimited food and drink from Beverly Hills restaurants.

“The Taste Of Beverly Hills” will continue from 7-11 p.m. Friday with “The Art of Mixing,” with guests sampling cuisine from than 40 restaurants combined with beer, wine and cocktail tastings. Tickets are $150.

“Secrets from the Kitchen and Cellar” will be held from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, with chefs, sommeliers and other experts in food and wine showcasing their skills. Tickets are $125.

“Date Night” will be held from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, with live cooking demonstrations, been, wine and cocktail tastings, and live musical performances by Fitz & The Tantrums and Brent Bolthouse. Tickets are $150.

“The Art of Brunch,” will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, including a live “Gospel Brunch” performance; food from more than 40 restaurants; wine sessions from master sommeliers, wine educators and winery owners; and a pie contest. Tickets are $125.

The event will conclude with “BBQ in the Hills” from 7-11 p.m. Sunday with top area chefs and restaurants expressing their interpretation of what barbecue is all about. Tickets are $150.

All events will be held in a tent on the rooftop of the parking structure of the former Robinsons-May department store. Thanks to corporate sponsorships and donations, the event is being held at no cost to the city, Mayor Jimmy Delshad said.

Organizers hope to make “The Taste Of Beverly Hills” an annual event.

Delshad said the event was inspired by reaction during his foreign visits during his first yearlong term as mayor from 2007-2008.

“People would laugh at me” at mentions of Beverly Hills, 90210, thinking “such a thing didn’t exist,” and was merely the title of a Fox Broadcasting series that ran from 1990-2000, instead of the ZIP code for the city’s affluent northern portion, Delshad said.

(The city also has two other ZIP codes, 90211, for its southeast portion, and 90212 for its southwest portion.) “After a while, I thought, 90210 has a ring to it,” Delshad said. “Someday that date will match with our ZIP code. When I became the mayor in 2010, I said, `I’m not going to let it go by, but use it to celebrate the success of Beverly Hills.”‘
